Cocaine Worth $625,000 Found Floating in Gulf of Mexico

Boaters Make Uncommon Discovery

Boaters in southwest Florida discovered a package containing cocaine worth $625,000 floating in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, according to officials. The discovery is reminiscent of the "square grouper" marijuana smuggling days in the area.

The package contained approximately 56 pounds of cocaine, said Collier County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Michael McMaster.

Not an Isolated Incident

This is not the first time that cocaine has been found floating in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2019, two men were arrested after they were found with over 1,000 pounds of cocaine that had been recovered from the Gulf.

In 2017, a group of fishermen found a bale of cocaine worth $1.5 million floating off the coast of Louisiana.

Authorities Investigate

The Collier County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and is working to determine where the cocaine came from and who was responsible for dumping it in the Gulf.

The investigation is ongoing.
